Introduction to Texas Hold'em Texas Hold'em is the most recognized poker variation. While people might start out playing 5- or 7-Card Stud, the rise in poker's popularity in recent years has coincided with the popularity of Texas Hold'em. You'll find that online Texas Holdem is the most popular variation for playing poker online as well. Almost every casino will have a Holdem poker room and poker-only casinos will feature Texas Holdem front and center. As such, there's a big demand for tips and tricks for winning Texas Hold'em online. One of the greatest selling points for Texas Hold'em is that it is one of the easiest poker variations to learn. Other variations, such as Omaha High, might require a statistician to follow all the statistical possibilities for cards. Texas Holdem is more straightforward, and as a result it is well suited for the point and click of Internet play. Here are the basics. First, players ante up, called posting the blinds. A tip here is to start low. Bet small at first and build gradually. Don't bet more than you have already earned. Each player is dealt two cards, face down, followed by another round of betting. The dealer then puts down three communal cards, face up, called the flop. These communal cards are used by every player at the table. Another round of betting follows and the deal flips one more card onto the table, called the turn card. Betting continues, sometimes doubling in amount. Finally, the dealer reveals the final card, called the river. At this point, players reveal their hands, using the five dealer cards and the two face down cards, or pocket cards. The best hand wins. A fairly simple set-up is part of the reason why Holdem has grown so popular. It's also easy to burn through a large number of games very quickly - both good and bad news. The good news is that the quick game play is perfectly suited to playing on the desktop. The bad news is that game play can be so quick that betting can get away from you. Before you know it, you've played 50 games and you're $100 down. If you're a newbie, start slowly. Even no limit rooms will have small limit minimums, so go to a lower-bet room until you get a hang of betting structure - i.e. when's the best time to bet or fold. The Texas Holdem rules are simple, but the game can be psychologically complex as you progress with the game. Such issues as reading your opponents style, betting strategies, the pre-flop hands with the best odds, position, and other factors all will come into play. |
